Formed in 1995, weaselhead is an all Aboriginal rock band based in Ottawa, Ontario with band members whose roots are as far away as Sturgeon Falls, Winnipeg, and Alberta. Their music has been described as both progressive and pop-ish but definitely a unique brand of melodic rock. weaselhead has a wide range of influences and styles, from electronic to classical, blues to guitar rock, which all fuse together to create the distinctive weaselhead sound. The band has released three CDs in a span of 8 years; A Residential School Story in 2011, refugees of romance in 2006 and distress signals on random frequencies in 2003.
In 2006, weaselhead was a final nominee for "Best Rock CD" for the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards. At the 2006 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards weaselhead was nominated for "Best Group or Duo", and Wayne Restoule was also nominated for "Best Producer/Engineer". The group also performed during the televised portion of the awards ceremony.
In 2007 weaselhead was nominated in the “Best Alternative Rock” category at the Indian Summer Music Awards in Milwaukee, Wisconsin US for their album "refugees of romance".
weaselhead’s latest release in 2011, A Residential School Story, is a concept album which tells the story of a First Nations family through 4 generations and the legacy of the Canadian Indian Residential School experience. It was nominated for two Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards, in the Best Rock CD and Best Cover Design categories. The group again performed during the awards ceremony event.
In 2012, weaselhead's song, That Bottle in Your Hand, from A Residential School Story, was nominated in the “Best Rock Song” category at the Indian Summer Music Awards in Milwaukee, Wisconsin US.
